The Ria Formosa is the largest wetland in southern Portugal, featuring an extensive chain of sandy islands parallel to the coast that protect the Ria from the Atlantic Ocean and create environmental conditions similar to those of an estuary. This Natural Park welcomes thousands of birds every year, many of which are rare to find. The wide variety of habitats in the Ria Formosa attracts more than 30,000 birds per year, representing 300 species, either during their migration or for breeding.
